A full rewire is one of the more disruptive improvements you can make to a property, so it is sensible to ask: how long does rewiring take? The honest answer is that it depends on the size, age and condition of the building, as well as whether it is occupied while work takes place. For some households, particularly those with young children, people working from home or anyone who relies on electrical medical equipment, staying elsewhere during the main first-fix period may be the better option. This is slower than working in an empty house, but it can reduce the impact on everyday life.

Before work begins, remove valuable items and clear furniture away from walls where possible. Ask which rooms will be worked on first, when electricity will be unavailable and whether any floor coverings need to be lifted. How to keep a rewire on programme
